Times Tables Rock Stars and NumBots Special Editions of whole-class incremental rehearsal
Using Times Tables Rock Stars and NumBots? I’ve worked with the team behind the excellent fact fluency apps for these Special Editions of my whole-class incremental rehearsal resources.
In an earlier post, I proposed 3 important steps to help students memorise basic number facts:
Strategy instruction - The goal is for students to learn a mental strategy that can be applied to a set of facts.
Strategy practice and retrieval practice - The goal is to develop accurate responding to the relevant set of facts.
Fluency practice - The goal is to develop fluent responding and long-term retention.
To support teachers in achieving the second step and prepare students to engage in fluency practice, I’ve made available slides for addition and subtraction and times tables.
The most effective way to use these slides are in conjunction with fluency practice. Ideally, you don’t want to leave a long gap between achieving accurate responding in a set of facts and getting started with fluency practice in that same set of facts. That’s why the slides include nudge reminders at the end of relevant sets to engage in fluency practice.
If your students are using NumBots or Times Tables Rock Stars, that means you want them to, for example, practise near doubles addition facts (e.g. 6 + 7) in the NumBots app right after you have worked through the incremental rehearsal slides for those facts.
I’m a big fan of NumBots and Times Tables Rock Stars, so I’m happy to release these special editions of my incremental rehearsal slides with specially designed icons from the NumBots/TTRS team to help students make the connection between success with incremental rehearsal and taking the next step in developing fact fluency on the apps.
Here’s how it works. At certain points in the incremental rehearsal sequence, you will see a special icon like this:
When you see the icon showing Rusty from NumBots, you draw students’ attention to it and say something like, ‘Now that we’ve finished this lesson, you can go to NumBots and practise addition of near doubles.’
Then the next time your students are in NumBots, they navigate to addition of near doubles and play for a best score.
